Abstract:
Discusses the Lutheran-Evangelical community in Poland, which was composed mainly of German immigrants (from 1815 on). Its most important publication was the journal "Zwiastun Ewangeliczny" ("Evangelical Harbinger"), published in Warsaw. Surveys Jewish themes found in the journal. The main theme was the necessity of missionizing to the Jews. The writers of the articles believed that only through conversion would the Jews cease to be enemies of Christianity. Discusses, as well, views on Zionism, which was sometimes met with approval and sometimes seen as an obstacle to missionary work. Another important issue was boycott of the Jews, promoted by Endecja circles at the beginning of the 20th century. Protestant circles criticized the idea of boycott for fear that they too would be excluded by Endecja from the "native Polish Christian group." However, before World War I, Polish-Jewish relations deteriorated so much that boycott became a criterion of Polishness; the journal then joined the anti-Jewish campaign. It ceased publication in 1914.
