Abstract:
Discusses the thesis that there was disapproval of Vichy antisemitism in Algeria, especially regarding abrogation of the Cremieux decree. Against the background of colonial rule in Algeria, surveys various Muslim reactions, from opposition to the racial laws to open support of Vichy measures. States that most of the population was satisfied with the situation and there was no broad opposition to Vichy. Many Arabs hoped to obtain better positions due to Aryanization, but that did not happen. Generally speaking, the antisemitism of the Arab population was much less virulent than that of the Algerian French. Notes that during this period there were no anti-Jewish pogroms in Algeria.
