Abstract:
Discusses the role and influence of the Society for the Advancement of Trade, Industry, and Crafts (Towarzystwo Rozwoju Handlu, Przemysłu i Rzemiosł [Rozwój]), founded in 1913, in promoting anti-Jewish boycotts and spreading anti-Jewish propaganda in Poland, especially through its journal, also called "Rozwój". To encourage trade among Poles, Rozwój advocated restrictions on Jews, based on the concept "either us or the Jews"; it espoused "de-Jewing" Poland. In 1920 it changed its name to the Society for the Advancement of National Life in Poland. The focus of its activities shifted to its Consumers' League, which established cooperatives and conducted anti-Jewish propaganda. Jews were depicted as enemies, not only of Poland but of the whole Christian world, and many priests spread Rozwój propaganda. The movement advocated eliminating Jews from political and social life, with the ultimate goal of expatriating the Jews. One of Rozwój's leaders was Roman Dmowski, who opposed the Polish government when it was perceived as too soft on the Jews. Rozwój's ideas were adopted by various nationalist organizations and, after Piłsudski's death, became government policy.
