Abstract:
Analyzes the motives of rescuers in collective actions (historical surveys show that most cases of successful Jewish rescue in France and Holland were collective ones). Gives an historical overview of such rescues in Nieuwlande and in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. Presents a sociological analysis of collective rescue activities, derived from data on 174 rescuers in Holland and France, using the theory of cognitive moral development and the rational choice theory of political participation. Shows that the rescuers' motivations were much more complicated than simple altruism; they include "parochial motivations" based on material, religious, and social norms, and also based on social justice. However, even more significant in the rescue activities (as in all collective actions) was organization, strong leadership, and material and social support.
