Abstract:
Maintains that the main significance of political antisemitism, which appeared on the European scene in the 1880s-90s, lies not in the fortunes of antisemitic parties, but in the normalization of antisemitism, i.e. its penetration into civil society and transformation into a common element in the views of conservative, anti-liberal factions. Illustrates this with the case of normalization of antisemitism in the pages of the fortnightly "La Civiltà Cattolica", the mouthpiece of the Jesuit community of the same name. In 1881 this periodical began to publish a series of articles opposing Jewish emancipation and accusing Jews of ritual murder and, together with Freemasonry, of a conspiracy against Christianity. All of the articles were written by Giuseppe Oreglia di Santo Stefano. At first, intellectual leaders of the community criticized him, and in 1884 his column in "La Civiltà Cattolica" was terminated. Nevertheless, Oreglia continued his publications in 1885-87, having only moderated his style. What is more important, from the mid-1880s on many contributors to "La Civiltà Cattolica", including those who had criticized Oreglia in 1881-82, began to reproduce and advance his antisemitic ideas. Suggests that a debate in 1882, when members of La Civiltà Cattolica failed to take a clear stance against Oreglia's anti-Jewish attacks, was a critical juncture in the establishment of antisemitism as an element in the culture of the Jesuit institution.
