Abstract:
The Bologna State Archive contains hundreds of volumes and fragments of the Talmud and other Jewish books and manuscripts, remains of the literary heritage of the Bologna Jewish community. The destruction of most of this heritage during the second half of the 16th century by the Inquisition was far-reaching and indiscriminate. Jewish books were either burned, expurgated, added to the collections of the Church, or used as recycled parchment. Mentions three Jewish writers who wrote testimonies to the waves of confiscation and bookburning in Bologna: Yosef ha-Kohen, Gedaliah Ibn Yahya, and Avraham ben Meshullam da Sant'Angelo (Avraham de Modena).
