Abstract:
One of the crucial factors in the rescue of the Danish Jews in October 1943 was the declared willingness of the Swedish government to harbor the refugees. Focuses on the role of the Swedish Foreign Office - in terms of its humanitarian motives and political policy. The initiative taken in October 1943 should be viewed against the background of the change of strategy undertaken by the Swedish government subsequent to the turn of the tide in the war in 1942-43. Humanitarian aid had always had a central position in Swedish foreign policy, but the October initiative became an instrument in securing Sweden a place in the new world order which would be dictated by the victorious Allies. A positive refugee policy would also improve Sweden's image in the eyes of the neighboring Norwegians and Danes. Based on the archives of the Swedish Foreign Office, analyzes the factors which made this rescue so successful.
