Abstract:
A paper delivered at a study day held in Berlin, 24 November 1985. Discusses Swedish policy toward refugees during the 1930s which contradicts the "friendly and liberal" image of Sweden. Between 1927-37, immigration was restricted in order to protect the "Swedish race" from foreigners and to avoid competition in the labor market. Jews were subject to restrictions by means of a special stamp in their passports. In 1939, this immigration policy was liberalized following a public debate in which the extreme-right, students, and the pro-German press had protested against refugee immigration.
