Abstract:
Based on new source material, relates how, under individual initiative or supported by an institution, doctors, priests, peasants, military officers, public servants, and sometimes gendarme officers, saved the lives of persecuted Jews, Gypsies, and POWs (English, French, Polish, Russian, and Romanian). Contends that saving of lives was part of the national resistance; it is evidence of the solidarity, humanity, and common sense of the Hungarian people, and an important element in the history of the war.
