Abstract:
Recalls the activities of the Düsseldorf Jewish art teachers Julo Levin (1901-1943) and Franz Monjau (1903-1945). Monjau was the author's husband. Both men had communist leanings. They were arrested in 1933, released, and allowed to teach at private Jewish schools from ca. 1936-1943, first in Düsseldorf and later in Berlin. Both of them collected their pupils’ drawings, which were preserved by Mieke throughout the war. These form part of the exhibition on which this book is based. Levin perished in Auschwitz, and Monjau in Buchenwald.
