Abstract:
Describes events in Vilnius during the Polish-Russian war in 1919-20. In January 1919 the town was seized by the Bolsheviks, but on 19 April the Polish Army entered the city and fully controlled it by 21 April. During those two days several tens of Jews were killed and many arrested by Polish soldiers. Polish authorities denied that the pogrom took place and accused the Jews of lack of loyalty toward Poles and pro-Russian behavior. Discusses the controversy between Polish and Jewish authorities regarding the events, and relates to the American involvement in attempts to clarify what happened in Vilnius. The U.S. ambassador to Poland, Hugh Gibson, checked Polish-Jewish relations during the tragic events in Vilnius and other Polish towns at the end of World War I and wrote reports. Since Gibson's reports did not satisfy Jewish circles in America, a special commission led by Henry Morgenthau was sent to Poland. According to Morgenthau's report there were antisemitic acts of violence, pogroms, killings, and looting; among the witnesses and victims was the writer and Zionist activist Leon Jaffe.
