Abstract:
A psychological study of the authoritarian personality was carried out in 1982 with a sample of 136 residents of Munich; this study was compared with results of such studies in the United States, Australia, and South Africa. The results show that the German respondents' scores were within the Western range. The authors therefore reject the existence of a "German authoritarian personality as an explanation for Nazism, as tyranny has been the normal human method of government". The Holocaust can be explained as part of the European tradition of antisemitism, due to factors like the Jews' exclusivity, and religious enmity towards them, and not as solely a German phenomenon.
Note:
With a discussion of German attitudes toward Jews.
