Abstract: "Emigration from Israel to other parts of the world has not yet received significant scholarly attention, as the subject is a sensitive one in Israeli society. Zionist ideology has long compelled Israelis to approach emigration from Israel through a very biased lens. The Hebrew words aliyah and yerida, which mean, respectively, "ascent" and "descent," are often used to refer to immigration and emigration. These ideological terms, which are charged with religious meaning, are heavily loaded with praise for immigrants and scorn for emigrants. Yet, thousands of Jews from all over the world have lived between two homelands, as the Israeli-Argentine case demonstrates. This study challenges the formerly dominant Zionist narrative that presents immigration to Israel as unique and emigration as a disgrace, shedding light on issues of immigrant identities, belonging, and expectations. Based on archival documents in English, Spanish, and Hebrew, as well as on interviews, Adrián Krupnik's study gives voice to Argentine migrants to and from Israel. The pursuit of two often irreconcilable ways of living-peace and economic prosperity-repeatedly vexed migrants moving in either direction. Many Jewish-Argentine migrants between 1980 and 2006 lost everything and became the "new poor" in both countries. Protracted recessions and incessant political crises in Argentina continued to drive migrants in one direction, only to arrive in an Israel submerged in the violence of multiple intifadas. In our own era, one that will see unprecedented global migration patterns based on similar economic and political-and environmental-upheavals, Between Two Homelands serves as an important and informative cautionary tale of the personal, social, and economic stakes at play in an utterly unsettled globalized landscape"--

Abstract: Gennady Estraikh's book explores the birth, growth, demise and afterlife of the Birobidzhan Jewish Autonomous Region (JAR). The History of Birobidzhan looks at how the shtetl was widely used in Soviet propaganda as a perfect solution to the 'Jewish question', arguing that in reality, while being demographically and culturally insignificant, the JAR played a key, and essentially detrimental, role in determining Jewish rights and entitlements in the Soviet world. Estraikh brings together a broad range of Russian and Yiddish sources, including archival materials, newspaper articles, travelogues, memoirs, belles-letters, and scholarly publications, as he describes and analyses the project and its realization not in isolation, but rather in the context of developments in both domestic and international life. As well as offering an assessment of the Birobidzhan project in the contexts of Soviet and Jewish history, the book also focuses on the contemporary 'Jewish' role of the region which now has only a few thousand Jewish occupants amongst its residents

Abstract: "Since Israel conquered the West Bank from Jordan in 1967, over 400,000 settlers have moved into the territory. In recent years, Israeli settler organizations and allied American-Jewish lobbyists have responded to international condemnation of the occupation by mobilizing narratives of indigeneity, claiming sovereign and divine rights to the land. Settler Indigeneity in the West Bank asks what Israeli settlers mean when they say they are indigenous; how settler indigeneity is felt, performed, and mediated; and what are the implications of indigeneity claims on the international stage. Building on foundational scholarship that has come out of post-colonial and indigeneity studies, the volume theorizes settler indigeneity as a cultural phenomenon and product of transnational settler-colonial histories, while also interrogating the dialectic of “settler” and “indigenous” to illustrate their co-constitution. Considering agriculture, clothing, food, language, and religious practices, the chapters explore how feelings of indigeneity are fashioned and how these feelings continue to transform the landscape of the West Bank. Offering a series of original ethnographic accounts of these cultures and communities, Settler Indigeneity in the West Bank intimately documents and discusses the processes of settler-nativization in conversation with a variety of related literature in anthropology, cultural studies, Israel studies, religious studies, and settler-colonial studies."--

Abstract: "Jewish texts and traditions. An expression of this was the remarkable turn to Bible translation. In the century and a half between Moses Mendelssohn's pioneering translation and the final one by Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig, German Jews produced sixteen different translations of at least the Pentateuch. Buber and Rosenzweig famously critiqued bourgeois German Judaism as a craven attempt to establish social respectability to facilitate Jews' entry into the middle class through a vapid, domesticated account of Judaism. Exploring Bible translations by Moses Mendelssohn, Leopold Zunz, and Samson Raphael Hirsch, I argue that each sought to ground a "reformation" of Judaism along bourgeois lines, which involved aligning Judaism with a Protestant concept of religion. They did so because they saw in bourgeois values the best means to serve God and the authentic actualization of Jewish tradition. Through their learned, creative Bible translations, Mendelssohn, Zunz, and Hirsch presented distinct visions of middle-class Judaism that affirmed Jewish nationhood while lighting the path to a purposeful, emotionally rich, spiritual life grounded in ethical responsibility"--

Abstract: "The Holocaust in Greece involved multiple actors. The German invasion in spring 1941 established three occupations regimes: Germans in the strategic areas of central Macedonia, Athens, and Thessaloniki; Italians all over Greece apart from Crete; and Bulgarians in eastern Macedonia and Thrace. For the sizeable Jewish community, these occupations posed a mortal threat. Despite the lack of credible statistics, a generally acknowledged number on the prewar Greek Jewish population is between 72,000-77,000, the Jews from Dodecanese included, albeit as Italian citizens. Abstract: In 1932, the budding twenty-three-year-old photographer Nachum Gidalewitsch (who would later become the celebrated Israeli photographer Tim Gidal) set out from his hometown of Munich, Germany, to visit relatives and photograph what were to him the exotic locals in Jewish Poland. The extraordinary photographic record of that visit is here presented for the first time in book form, in a poignant testimony and remembrance of a community that had no way to know it was in its last years. Gidal, who emigrated to British Mandate Palestine in 1936, was one of a select group of photographers who took advantage of new technology, specifically the lightweight and portable nature of the Leica camera, to found the pioneering field of photojournalism. He would go on to document World War II as a photo reporter and later to become a noted objective photographer. In these photographs taken early in his remarkable career, Gidal captures the poignant ordinariness of a thriving community just before its annihilation. These straightforward, honest, and intimate portraits embody the mission the photographer himself once described as capturing variations on the everlasting tragicomedy of human life
