Das Anliegen dieses Buches ist es, verschiedene dieser Dichotomien zueinander ins Verhältnis zu setzen und insbesondere diejenigen Wertungen, die mit dem Gegensatzpaar männlich - weiblich verknüpft sind, mit den Wertungen anderer Dichotomien abzugleichen.     Abstract: "Menasseh ben Israel (1604-1657) was one of the best-known rabbis in early modern Europe. In the course of his life he became an important Jewish interlocutor for Christian scholars interested in Hebrew studies and negotiated with Oliver Cromwell and Parliament the return of the Jews to England. Born to a family of former conversos, Menasseh was versed in Christian theology and astutely used this knowledge to adapt the content and tone of his publications to the interests and needs of his Christian readers. Judaism for Christians: Menasseh ben Israel (1604-1657) is the first extensive study to systematically focus on key titles in Menasseh's Latin works and discuss the success and failure of his strategies of translation in the larger context of early modern Christian Hebraism. Rauschenbach also examines the mistranslation of his books by Christian scholars, who were not yet ready to share Menasseh's vision of an Abrahamic theology and of a republic of letters whose members were not divided by denomination. Ultimately, Menasseh's plans to use Jewish knowledge as an entrée billet for Jews into Christian societies proved to be illusory, as Christian readers understood him instead as a Jewish witness for "Christian truths." Menasseh's Jewish coreligionists disapproved of what they perceived to be his dangerous involvement in Christian debates, providing non-Jews with delicate information. It was only a century after his death that Menasseh became a model for new generations of Jewish scholars." (Roman&Littlefield)

    Abstract: "This book discusses the "long fifteenth century" in Iberian history, between the 1391 pogroms and the forced conversions of Aragonese Muslims in 1526, a period characterized by persecutions, conversions and social violence, on the one hand, and cultural exchange, on the other. It was a historical moment of unstable religious ideas and identities, before the rigid turn taken by Spanish Catholicism by the middle of the sixteenth century; a period in which the physical and symbolic borders separating the three religions were transformed and redefined but still remained extraordinarily porous.     Abstract: Despite scholars’ ongoing historical and sociological investigations into the ancient family, the right and the status of the firstborn son have been rarely explored by NT scholars, and this topic has not attracted the careful attention that it deserves. This work offers a study of the meaning of the firstborn son in the New Testament paying specific attention to the concept of primogeniture in the Old Testament and Jewish literature. This study argues that primogeniture was a unique institution in Jewish society, and that the title of the firstborn son indicates his access to the promise of Israel, and is associated with the right of the inheritance (i.e., primogeniture) including the Land and the special status of Israel

    Abstract: Sabrina Schütz untersucht im vorliegenden Band die Vorstellungen von ›Nation‹ und ›Nationalismus‹ im frühen deutschen zionistischen Diskurs vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Im Fokus der Studie stehen eine Reihe von markanten politisch-ideologischen Themenfeldern und Schlüsseldebatten aus der zionistischen Wochenzeitung Jüdische Rundschau, die mit Konzepten der modernen Nationalismus- und Zionismusforschung sowie mit Ansätzen aus der postkolonialen Kritik untersucht werden. In enger Anlehnung an Homi K. Bhabhas Hybriditätstheorie geht die Autorin von der These aus, dass der deutsche Zionismus eine eigentümliche, ›hybride‹ Variante von Nationalismus entwickelte, die einerseits ausgiebig auf die Traditionsbestände des deutschen Nationalismus zurückgriff, und andererseits sich zugleich davon distanzierte. The present study explores concepts of ‘nation’ and ‘nationalism’ in early German Zionism before the First World War. Doing so, it focuses on a series of crucial issues and keynote debates in the contemporary Zionist press, particularly in the prominent Zionist newspaper Jüdische Rundschau. The introduction adapts current theories of Zionism, nationalism and postcolonial studies so as to provide a methodological framework of analysis for Diaspora Zionism. It argues that German Zionism is best understood in line with Homi K. Bhabha’s notion of hybridity as it was characterized by a close affinity to various forms of German nationalism, while, at the same time, by its own distinctive – albeit contradictory or counternarrative – transformations of these adapted ideas.

Sie gehen systematisch vor. Die mörderische NS-Ideologie und deren Akzeptanz im Militär werden breit dargestellt. Dann folgt kurz der Verlauf des Weltkriegs. Ein grosses Kapitel widmet sich dem sogenannten "Vernichtungskrieg im Osten". Der Grad der Beteiligung der Wehrmacht wird geschildert und danach der Krieg an den übrigen Fronten. Breiten Raum nimmt die Verarbeitung des Themas nach Kriegsende ein und der Beginn der wissenschaftlichen Aufarbeitung Anfang der 1960er-Jahre. Die Akzeptanz der schlimmen Wahrheit bei Bundeswehrführung und Politik führte zur Abkehr von der Wehrmacht als Teil der Traditionspflege. - Systematisch, übersichtlich, sprachlich sachlich. (1)

    Abstract: In Private Associations and Jewish Communities in the Hellenistic and Roman Cities, Benedikt Eckhardt brings together a group of experts to investigate a problem of historical categorization. Traditionally, scholars have either presupposed that Jewish groups were “Greco-Roman Associations” like others or have treated them in isolation from other groups. Attempts to begin a cross-disciplinary dialogue about the presuppositions and ultimate aims of the respective approaches have shown that much preliminary work on categories is necessary. This book explores the methodological dividing lines, based on the common-sense assumption that different questions require different solutions. Re-introducing historical differentiation into a field that has been dominated by abstractions, it provides the debate with a new foundation.     Abstract: explores the various ways that ancient Jewish and Christian writers engaged with and interpreted the Hebrew Bible in antiquity, focusing on physical mechanics of rewriting and reuse, modes of allusion and quotation, texts and text forms, text collecting, and the development of interpretative traditions.     Abstract: Eva-Maria Schrage untersucht in ihrer Studie, wie junge Jüdinnen und Juden ihre Religion heute leben. Zugleich geht sie der Frage nach, wie Rabbiner, Rabbinerinnen und religiöse Gemeinschaften damit umgehen, dass die Religion im Leben vieler Jüdinnen und Juden heute eine untergeordnete Rolle spielt. Die Grundlage der Studie sind sowohl narrative Interviews religiöser Führungspersönlichkeiten als auch biographische Erzählungen von Mitgliedern verschiedener jüdischer Gemeinden. In der Beschneidungsdebatte 2012 wurde erstmals in der deutschen Nachkriegsgeschichte eine religiöse Praxis des Judentums öffentlich diskutiert. Unabhängig davon gibt es innerhalb des hiesigen Judentums schon länger vielfältige Diskussionen darüber, wie man die Religion in der Gegenwartsgesellschaft praktizieren soll.

    Abstract: "We treat the word Judaism as a given for describing the religion of Jews. But the term is in some ways socially constructed, rather than inevitable. After all, exactly what would constitute "authentic" Judaism? Some have argued that there are multiple Judaisms, going in the direction of plurals that so many scholars find satisfying. But Boyarin takes a different tack, proposing that before the modern era there should be no "Judiasm" at all. For Boyarin, there was no sphere of life that can be called Judaism that was separate from the political, artistic, and cultural elements of life. Moreover, he argues that Judaism is a Christian coinage to serve Christian discursive purposes by setting what we call Judaism in opposition to Christianity and that the term has little utility for Jews. The various Jewish languages have no such concept and no such term. He believes that categories drawn from outside the culture are anachronistic, not informative. Boyarin will be making a case for substituting Jewry for Judaism. Jewry is a concept that integrates many aspects of the lives of Jews, rather than separating out religion from other aspects of life"--

    Abstract: Over the last decades, studies on cultural memory have taken a 'spectral turn'. They have explored the potential of haunting metaphors for addressing past instances of violence that affect present cultural realities. Zuzanna Dziuban contributes to the discussions on the figure of the ghost by enquiring into its culturally and historically located modality: the emergence of Jewish ghosts in contemporary Polish popular culture, literature and critical art. Locating this new interest in Jewish ghosts on the map of other Polish (and Jewish) ghostologies, this study seeks to explore the cultural and political functions of post-Holocaust haunted imaginaire.

    Abstract: "Die Umsetzung der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgungs- und Mordpolitik im Strafgefängnis Wolfenbüttel. Das Strafgefängnis Wolfenbüttel war die zentrale Haftstätte im früheren Land Braunschweig. Ab 1933 wies die Justiz zunehmend politisch Andersdenkende, sozial und rassistisch Ausgegrenzte, Homosexuelle sowie Zeugen Jehovas ein, während des Krieges auch ausländische Gefangene. 1937 wurde im Gefängnis eine Hinrichtungsstätte eingerichtet, bis zur Befreiung wurden hier 500 Todesurteile vollstreckt. Die Dauerausstellung der Gedenkstätte in der JVA Wolfenbüttel geht am Beispiel Wolfenbüttels der Frage nach, welche Rolle Justiz und Strafvollzug als Mittel nationalsozialistischer Herrschaft spielten. Auch die Kontinuitäten und Brüche in der frühen Bundesrepublik werden näher in den Blick genommen: Die Justiz sollte zwar eine neue, rechtsstaatliche Funktion erfüllen, gleichzeitig gab es aber in manchen Bereichen eine Praxis, die jener aus der NS-Zeit ähnelte. Der Katalog präsentiert die wichtigsten Fotografien, Dokumente, Objekte und die erläuternden Texte der Ausstellung.     Abstract: "Calendars map time, shaping and delineating our experience of it. While the challenges to tracking Jewish conceptions of time during the Holocaust were substantial, Alan Rosen reveals that many took great risks to mark time within that vast upheaval. Rosen inventories and organizes Jewish calendars according to the wartime settings in which they were produced--from Jewish communities to ghettos and concentration camps. The calendars he considers reorient views of Jewish circumstances during the war and show how Jews were committed to fashioning traditional guides to daily life, even in the most extreme conditions. In a separate chapter, moreover, he elucidates how Holocaust-era diaries sometimes served as surrogate Jewish calendars. All in all, Rosen presents a revised idea of time, continuity, the sacred and the mundane, the ordinary and the extraordinary even when death and destruction were the order of the day.     Abstract: "Time in the Babylonian Talmud explores how rabbinic jurists' language, reasoning, and storytelling reveal their assumptions about what we call time. By "time," I do not mean measurements of duration such as hours, minutes, or days. There are more elastic and capacious approaches to time in the Babylonian Talmud (Bavli). As Virginia Woolf wrote, "An hour, once it lodges in the queer element of the human spirit, may be stretched to fifty or a hundred times its clock length; on the other hand, an hour may be accurately represented on the timepiece of the mind by one second." Considering imaginative writing by modernist writers like Woolf, as well as modern philosophical writings, allows us to break away from familiar presuppositions about time and to see temporal phenomena anew even in ancient cultural artifacts. This book turns to an ancient text, the Bavli, which remains a foundational text of Jewish law and culture, and uses it to think carefully about ancient and contemporary concepts of time. As we will see, temporality permeates the most intriguing legal concepts in the Bavli and it is equally central to the Bavli's storytelling. With this book, then, I hope to move a common debate about time in classical Judaism beyond the question of whether there was or was not a concept of time in rabbinic sources. Instead, I argue for examining in detail "time-like" phenomena in rabbinic texts. This approach sheds light on rabbinic thought in its late-antique intellectual contexts and reveals what Bavli temporal thinking can contribute to contemporary theories of time"--

    Abstract: Von einer Lehre der Verachtung zu einer Lehre des Respekts: Nach 1945 erkannten Kirchen und Theologie langsam ihre antijüdische Geschichte und ihre Mitschuld an der Schoah. Ein wesentliches Resultat dieses Umdenkprozesses stellt der jüdisch-christliche Dialog dar. In Deutschland und Österreich etablierten sich in den Nachkriegsjahrzehnten jüdisch-christliche Basisinitiativen auf Grundlage der Hebräischen Bibel als gemeinsamer Glaubensurkunde von Judentum und Christentum. Vier Pionierinitiativen stehen im Zentrum der Monographie, die Genese, Entwicklung und Bibelrezeptionen dieser Bildungsformate analysiert. Die qualitativ orientierte Studie gewährt den Wahrnehmungen und Erinnerungen von Dialogakteurinnen und ‑akteuren breiten Raum. [Bible-Based Friendship. Jewish-Christian Grass Root Initiatives in Germany and Austria after 1945] From a doctrine of contempt to a doctrine of respect: After 1945 Christian churches had to confront their own anti-Jewish tradition and recognized their complicity for the shoah. The Jewish-Christian Dialogue is one significant result of that shift in mindset. In Germany and Austria, Jewish-Christian discussion initiatives based on the Hebrew Bible - a common document of faith shared by both Judaism and Christianity - were established in the first decades of the post-war period. This monography concentrates on four such dialogue initiatives, and the genesis and development of these dialogue-based educational formats and their reception of the Bible are analysed. The qualitative study grants dialogue-participants ample space for their perceptions und experiences.

    Abstract: "Converts in the Dead Sea Scrolls examines the meaning of the term gēr in the Dead Sea Scrolls. While often interpreted as a resident alien, this study of the term as it is employed within scriptural rewriting in the Dead Sea Scrolls concludes that the gēr is a Gentile convert to Judaism. Contrasting the gēr in the Dead Sea Scrolls against scriptural predecessors, Carmen Palmer finds that a conversion is possible by means of mutable ethnicity. Furthermore, mutable features of ethnicity in the sectarian movement affiliated with the Dead Sea Scrolls include shared kinship, connection to land, and common culture in the practice of circumcision. The sectarian movement is not as closed toward Gentiles as has been commonly considered"--
