Abstract:
A psychological analysis of Goebbels as a young man, especially as reflected in his diary from June 1924 (when he was 27) until June 1925, when he joined the Nazi party. During this period and until 1926 he had a warm relationship with Else J., a half-Jew. The diaries express despair both over his personal life and over the state of the nation. They contain a dualistic vision of the struggle between the Jew as the agent of evil - the Antichrist - and the Aryan as representative of light. Argues that Goebbels' racism has its roots in Christian apocalypse.
