Abstract:
Based mainly on Goebbels' diaries, reconstructs the events at the commemorative reunion of Nazi comrades in München on 9 November 1938, which issued in the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. Goebbels' comments make clear that he received the order for the pogrom from Hitler; it was not his own initiative, as previously thought. This conclusion is supported by the role of former members of the Stosstrupp, Hitler's bodyguard and the spearhead of the 1924 putsch. It was disbanded after the failure of the putsch, but its members remained very close to Hitler (one, Julius Schaub, became his personal adjutant), and as a uniformed body they played a central part in the reunion of 1938. They swarmed through the streets of München, destroying Jewish shops and setting fire to the Ohel Jakob synagogue, ignoring Goebbels' efforts to prevent this. Argues that this fact demonstrates that the Stosstrupp had received orders from Hitler himself which overrode those of Goebbels.
