Abstract:
A paper delivered at a conference in Prague, September 1990. Discusses Vatican policy during the Holocaust. The Vatican was fully informed about the fate of Europe's Jews but did not publicly condemn the Nazi crimes. Only in 1943, when the Nazis began deporting the Jews of Rome, were semi-official steps taken in order to try and stop it. Estimates that in Rome about 4,000 Jews found refuge in various Catholic institutions.
