Abstract:
Surveys various scholarly approaches to Jewish humor, its relation to Jewish identity, and its emotional, sociological, and intellectual perspectives. Discusses the place of antisemitism in the development of Jewish humor (i.e. humor as an escape from the tragic realities of Jewish life) and the link between self-deprecation and Jewish self-hatred, studying Woody Allen's humor through the characters portrayed in his films. In answer to the accusation that Allen is a self-hating Jew, argues that he identifies himself as a self-affirming Jew and condemns self-hating Jews in his films.
