Abstract:
Argues that the Holocaust should not become the core of Jewish identity, and deplores the proliferation of memorials and the spread of the Holocaust myth - the view that the Holocaust was a unique transcendent event rather than the product of a specific ideological and technological system which led the Nazis to accomplish the execution of their mission against the Jews. Although the Holocaust resulted from a unique combination of extreme factors, these factors may reappear, such as the tendency to categorize groups as "other", the development of the technology of power and the police state, ideological indoctrination, and adulation of a leader. The article is followed by a response by Richard L. Rubenstein (also in "Tikkun", pp. 66-67) in support of these views, but doubting whether a demystification of the Holocaust is possible.
