Abstract:
A paper delivered at the conference on "European Unity in Context", Hull, September 1988. Relates the development of Marxist thought on Judaism and antisemitism from its conception up to the present. The ambiguity of Karl Marx's views on antisemitism led to a diversity of Marxist views on the Jews and antisemitism, and on the Holocaust. Compares Leninist with Stalinist versions of Marxism and their attitudes to antisemitism, and discusses anti-Zionism in the Soviet Union. Describes trends in East German historiography on the Holocaust, based on a strong anti-fascist stance.
