Kurzfassung:
Analyzes the role of the Shoah in the formation of the Zionist national state ideology. Maintains that Israel's political culture was orientated to generate a "new Jewish identity", in the process of which the Holocaust was needed as a matrix for the "raison d'être" or justification of the Jewish state. However, actual Shoah survivors were used only insofar as they could be fully integrated into the task of establishing a Jewish state and society. Discusses, also, differences in interpretation of the meaning of the Shoah between secular and Orthodox non-Zionist Israelis.
