Abstract:
The Bibliotheca of Photius preserved what Diodorus Siculus wrote of the siege of Jerusalem by Antiochus VII Sidetes. Through the intermediary of Posidonius of Apamea, this account depends on a Jewish source which took up the narrative motif of the succession of the ages of the world to oppose the king to Antiochus IV Epiphanes, his predecessor, and thus to blacken the impiety of John Hyrcanus. For this source, the Maccabean crisis is idealized as a golden age in order to better denounce the power exercised in Jerusalem by the Hasmonean high priests, at a time when it is threatened by the events of the war of Ptolemais. 1 and 2 Macc probably do not function otherwise.
