Abstract:
Discusses reactions of the Zionist youth movement Habonim in Canada and in the U.S. to information regarding the Holocaust in Europe. Examines when the information on the Final Solution reached the leadership and what was done to disseminate it and to foster insight into the meaning of the calamity. The leaders of Habonim learned about the Final Solution in August 1942. Information about the Holocaust was regularly published in the movement's periodicals, but understanding it took some time. Most of the senior members and leaders joined the armed forces. The national and local leadership was maintained by 14-16 year-olds who lacked experience. The awareness regarding Holocaust events seems to have been confined to a small circle of leaders who failed to imbue the rank and file with consciousness of the Holocaust and its meaning.
