Abstract:
A lecture delivered at the Ecumenical Theological Research Fraternity of Jerusalem, 31 May 1986. The Holocaust was a unique event in the history of the Jewish people, but it also holds lessons for the rest of humanity. Both the Christian Church and Christian theology suffer from a credibility crisis as a result of the Holocaust because of the participation of many Christians and the failure of the Christian establishment. Describes similar factors in the Jewish and American Indian genocides and suggests that a scientific method can be used to create an "Early Warning System" to avert future genocidal programs. Confrontation with the Holocaust as a unique event also requires acceptance of a restored Israel. Appeals to American Churches to realize the credibility gap after the Holocaust and reconstruct Christian theology.
