Abstract:
A revised version of Hilberg's remarks at the closing session of a conference held at Yad Vashem in November 2004. Divides the history of Holocaust research into three periods. In the early period, which began already in the Nazi era, scholars examined newspaper articles, printed laws, and official German sources. In the "period of organized research", after the Nuremberg Trials, they began to work with the formidable array of documents in various archives. In the present "period of acknowledged complexity", historians already possess some knowledge of the Holocaust, and now the time has come to contextualize it with other events and processes in wartime Europe.
