Kurzfassung:
Agudath Israel president Jakob Rosenheim (1870-1965) developed a distinctive theological interpretation of the Holocaust during the war years. According to him, it resulted from self-deifying nationalistic sovereignty which came to replace the ideal of the unity of mankind, which is rooted in God and His Torah. Two principles clashed in the war, the Abrahamic principle of unity and the Nimrodic one of national sovereignty, and Israel, as the bearer and the embodiment of the first principle, lost a great number of victims in this struggle. He contended that the proper answer to the Holocaust is not Zionism, but Jewish survival in the world and recognition of God's authority and of His Torah.
