Abstract:
The historiography of the Warsaw ghetto uprising tends to ascribe the leading role to the left-wing Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB) and to underestimate or neglect the Revisionist Zionist organization's Jewish Military Union (ŻZW). However, reliable accounts show that in the areas where the ŻZW fought the battles were more fierce, and that this organization was much better armed than the rival ŻOB. Neglect of the ŻZW's role can be explained by the fact that the ŻOB's role in the uprising is well documented and that ŻOB's veterans did much to extol its role, while only scant documentation on the ŻZW exists. On the other hand, many of the accounts on the ŻZW, both Jewish and Polish, are unreliable. In particular, testimonies by Iwanski and others on the little-known Polish underground organization Korpus Bezpieczeństwa, which they claim to have spawned the ŻZW, raise doubts as to their veracity. Political considerations in Israel have shaped the narratives on ŻZW's role in the uprising, and this issue requires elucidation.
