Abstract:
A reply to Habermas's critique of Hillgruber's "Zweierlei Untergang" which appeared in "Die Zeit". Argues that Habermas used linguistic details in the title and the text to accuse Hillgruber of apologizing for Nazism and the murder of the Jews. Pt. 2 of the book, "The End of European Judaism", is a revised version of a lecture given at the Stuttgart Conference in 1984. Emphasizes that most delegates, including Israelis, approved his thesis that the Final Solution was Hitler's personal initiative. Reiterates the argument that the Final Solution was essentially part of the racial war of expansion in the East. Defends the connection between the fate of the Jews and that of East Germans, and raises further research problems.
