Abstract:
A paper delivered at a conference held in Białystok, September 1987. Discusses the nationalistic ideology of the Endecja movement and the place of antisemitism within it, as expressed in the early writings of its main ideologues, Roman Dmowski and J.L. Popławski. In their opinion, the very nature of the Jewish collectivity was in essence disintegrating, anti-national, and alien to Polish national interests. Already in 1899, Endecja’s program on the preconditions for achieving independence for Poland stated that the Poles must take over as many sectors as possible from the Jews who dominate commerce and industry. Underlines Dmowski’s decisive influence on radicalizing the anti-Jewish ideology of Endecja, but stresses that in the years 1895-1905 it was still a moderate view.
