Abstract:
Describes the representation of Jewish characters in Droste-Hülshoff's novella "Die Judenbuche" (1842), and notes the traditional anti-Jewish prejudices of the German characters. Argues that the author presents the Jews in a biased way; they are seen as negative individuals or as a monolithic, inferior group, rather enigmatic and malign. Mentions that Droste-Hülshoff's personal letters contain clearly anti-Jewish statements, concluding that her own position is identical to that of the narrative perspective in her work.
