Abstract:
Describes rescue activities of Jewish Agency emissaries in Istanbul during World War II, focusing on the activities of Teddy Kollek, Ehud Avriel, Yitzhak Berman, and Francis Ofner, all of whom established contact with American and British intelligence groups. Notes that Kollek and Avriel worked mainly with the American Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which was in general not so careful. Kollek and Avriel hired agents to take money to Jewish resistance groups in Europe, but three of them were actually double agents who reported all their activities to the Nazis. Berman's and Ofner's groups attempted to help European Jewry by helping Allied intelligence. They worked mainly with the more careful American Office of War Information (OWI), providing information received from agents in various European countries. Notes, however, that there was at least one double agent in Berman's group who passed on information to the Gestapo.
