Abstract:
Surveys responses of Israelis to the Holocaust. In the late 1940s-50s there was a general desire to stress resistance and downplay the genocide, an attitude which was supported especially by survivors who had been resistance fighters in the Zionist youth movements. The Eichmann trial was not a dramatic turning point in the attitude of Israelis, but it did mark the beginning of a gradual increase in interest in the Holocaust. Following the publication of Hannah Arendt's "Eichmann in Jerusalem", Israeli researchers began to study the role of the Judenräte in the genocide. Later, other factors were studied as well, such as various forms of resistance.
