Abstract:
Compares the image of the Jew in Spanish literature of the 12th-15th centuries with that of the Muslim. The main accusation against the Jews was deicide, the alleged complicity in the death of Jesus. Other accusations were the desecration of images (e.g. crucifixes, wax images of Jesus) by Jews, and their alliance with the Devil, who helps them in their sorcery. The identification of Jews with wealth is also a commonplace in medieval literature. In comparison with the Muslims, the Jews were never regarded as a military or political enemy. The Muslims were considered better from the religious viewpoint because they allegedly recognized the holiness of the Virgin Mary, while the Jews did not.
