Abstract:
I offer a close reading and translation of a silluq written by Qillir for theNew Year, מלך ייראך לא מי” Who would not fear you, king.” I argue thatin the silluq, Qillir develops exegetical trajectories concerning therelationship between the angels and humankind, and between the nationsand Israel, in a somewhat novel direction. Qillir figures Israel as thequintessential human being, implicitly distinguished from the nations notbecause the nations are bestial, but because the nations are linked to theangels. By being joined to the angels, the nations, as it were, abandon thecategory of humankind to Israel, so that, when humankind eclipses theangels, as the exegetical tradition describes, it does so as Israel alone.
