Abstract:
Discusses the 1144 blood libel of Norwich, the first accusation of its kind, focusing on Thomas of Monmouth's "The Life and Passion of Saint William", written ca. 1150-72. Notes that Jews had come to live in the town only a few years before the body of the 12-year-old Christian boy William, who lived there with his uncle, was found in the nearby forest. Although his uncle immediately blamed the Jews for the murder, the Church did not support his claim until several years later, after Thomas arrived at the local monastery where William was reburied. Thomas seized the opportunity to create a myth that the murder was due to a Jewish ritual performed every year before Passover. Points out that the Jews of England had not suffered much during the first and second Crusades, but after Thomas's accusation they became scapegoats there for all kinds of evil. They suffered from further blood libels and other accusations, including host desecration and well-poisoning.
