Abstract:
The new Hungarian constitution, which is to come into effect on 1 January 2012, denies the culpability of the Hungarian state for the organized murder of 600,000 Jews in 1944-45. Its preamble states that the nation lost its self-determination with the German occupation of the country in 1944, thus implying that the state cannot be held accountable today for its murderous wartime policies. In addition, András Levente Gál, an undersecretary of state, expressed displeasure that the permanent exhibition of the Hungarian Holocaust Museum in Budapest explored the thieving and murderous role of the Hungarian state in the Holocaust. The museum's director, László Harsányi, refused to instruct the scholars to fashion the historical exhibitions according to government policy, and was dismissed from his post. Notes that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is not himself antisemitic, but he is a political opportunist eager to save restitution funds and to attract support from the resurging far-right.
