Abstract:
Clarifies incorrect data contained in testimonies, memoirs, and monographs on Rabbi Zvi Koretz's role as head of the Salonika Judenrat, the rescue activities conducted by staff members of the Italian consulate in Salonika (Guelfo Zamboni, Giuseppe Castruccio, Riccardo Rosenberg), and the involvement of the Italian consulate in the escape of Vital Hasson - the head of the Jewish police in Salonika - to Albania. Based on records of the Italian consulate in Salonika, the Wiener Library in London, and the U.S. National Archives. Shows that, on one occasion, Rabbi Koretz offered himself to the Nazis as a hostage in place of a group of Jews who were rounded up by the Nazis as hostages. Both Zamboni and Castruccio, the Italian consuls posted in Salonika during the occupation, were involved in rescue efforts on behalf of Salonika's Jews; the involvement of the Italians in the escape of Vital Hasson was related to their last minute rescue efforts. Rosenberg was an Italian intelligence officer of Jewish origin.
