Abstract:
Examines Morand's unabashed antisemitism behind the cultured, speed- and fun-loving appearance of a dandy. Shows that his hatred of Jews, present throughout a literary production which spans almost 50 years, only increased after the Shoah. In his posthumously published "Journal inutile" (2000), based on entries from 1968-72, Morand (1888-1976) subscribes to Chateaubriand's and Drumont's views of Jews as dirty and conspiring to take over the world. Views Morand as antithetical to his friend Marcel Proust, who played with prevailing antisemitic prejudices, whereas Morand internalized them. Concludes that though Morand's egotism made him blind to what was going on in Europe, he cannot be freed of charges of antisemitism.
