Abstract:
Discusses Memmi's attitude towards the "unfortunate" condition of being Jewish, which he sees as the objective result of the "otherness" of the Jew and the relations between Jews and non-Jews. Although opposed to Sartre's definition of a Jew based on antisemitism, he sees Jewishness as essentially negative and, like Freud, considers the Jewish religion as a neurosis which encloses the Jew in both an internal and external ghetto. Defines Memmi as "a Jew despite himself", one who is unable to escape his Jewish condition, and outlines his search for a solution in secularism and Zionism.
