Abstract:
Discusses, with bibliographical references, the Jewish presence in Italy during the Middle Ages and the early modern period, and Jewish-Christian relations. Refers to anti-Jewish medieval legislation, as well as to growing popular hostility against Jews in the 15th century, the time of the general expulsion from Sardinia, Sicily, and Naples, expressed in the closure of Italian society and rejection of Jews. Describes the period of the Counter-Reformation, with the persecution of Conversos and attempts at forced conversions (e.g. Anna del Monte, 1749).
