Abstract:
The chapter on individuals with disabilities and their families explores the hallmarks, realities, and possibilities of a Jewish inclusive ethos and practice. Included is an examination of its roots in biblical and rabbinic text and its form and function in contemporary Jewish life. Also addressed is the research on best practices of inclusive faith communities, barriers to full participation in Jewish life, and bright spots in Jewish inclusion. While woven throughout, this latter section includes an in-depth dive into particular innovations in Jewish ritual and practice for individuals with disabilities. The chapter concludes with recommendations for areas for future growth both in the “structure of inclusion” and the “spirit of belonging.”
