Abstract:
Tracy Strong Jr. was born in Seattle in 1915. In 1940, he volunteered to work for the European Student Relief Fund, to help students displaced by the war to continue their studies. He was based in Geneva, but lived in France a good deal of the time. Based on journals and letters kept by Strong, relates that he and his colleagues found an old hotel in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, the Maison des Roches, which they rented. They set up committees throughout France looking for students who needed help. Most of the students were Jewish; some of them were in internment camps. At one time, the Vichy government gave permission for anybody to leave the camp who could prove that he had the means to live outside on his own; the hotel served as an address for these Jews. Eventually, a total of 79 students passed through the Maison des Roches. Strong also helped these young men to escape into Switzerland.
