Abstract:
Investigates the effects of Holocaust denial propaganda based on two experimental studies on 131 social psychology undergraduate students in the USA. Applies Altemeyer's authoritanianism and Holocaust Belief Scales to two research projects. In the first study, results revealed that Holocaust denial propaganda was effective in creating doubts among students and that those characterized as "authoritarian personalities" are particularly susceptible to such propaganda. The second study (one year later) revealed that intellectual knowledge of the World War II period increased belief in the Holocaust, but all subjects believed less strongly that the Holocaust took place after reading denial literature. Concludes that Holocaust denial is rooted in ignorance; emphasizes the need to reinforce Holocaust education in order to inculcate resistance to revisionist claims, and argues for greater efforts to target the "authoritarian personality".
