Abstract:
Presents a letter sent by Moses Seixas to Aaron Lopez in October 1780 in regard to a request to lend Newport's synagogue for a Christian service. Suggests that the request probably came on behalf of the French forces who were using the church to billet their troops. Ezra Stiles stated that holding Christian services in a synagogue would violate Jewish religious principles. Guttmann presents his own responsum here to the question which arose in 1780, concluding that Stiles was correct in saying what he did. Guttmann found halakhic texts about selling a synagogue, which is allowed. Lending a synagogue for Christian services is not even discussed in rabbinical texts, because it would clearly have been a wrong thing to do.
