Abstract:
Presents three French documents (with English translations) which mention Isaac Tamar, Tamard and Thamar - all the same person - dated between 1777-1782. Isaac Tamar was the son of Mordechai ben Isaac Tama who was a Portuguese Jew living in Jerusalem and was sent to southern France to raise money for the community, but decided to remain in France (after having lived in Holland and in colonial New York). His son, Isaac, received the above documents of free passage when he was sent by order of the King of France to Jerusalem to report on a well-known quarrel which had arisen between different Christian orders in Jerusalem, all of them claiming to be the Ordre du Saint Sépulcre. The outcome of this mission is unknown. A Rabbi Isaac Tamah played an important role as a member of Napoleon's Sanhedrin in 1806, and was probably the same person.
