Abstract:
The events of the First Revolt were a significant turning point in the history of the Jewish people and caused a decline in the status of the Priests (Cohanim), whose importance stemmed in large part from the Temple service. Various sources indicate that the struggle between Priests and Sages did not end with the destruction of the Second Temple. Rather, the Priests’ demand for recognition as a group with distinct spiritual status continued to influence Jewish society even after the Second Temple was destroyed. Analysis of a sugiya in the Talmud Yerushalmi (Berachot with parallel in TY Nazir), with attention to the framing of the section and processing of raw materials in its various parts, indicates that the editor’s central message was that Priests should not separate themselves from geographical spaces of Jewish society at large out of concern for preserving their own ritual purity. Kevod harabim, interpreted here as honor that must be given to the public as a collective, requires mutual presence through all spaces. This greater unity is perceived as essential to the Jewish People as a whole, and it supersedes the priestly prohibition against defilement from the dead.
