Abstract: This article examines the character of the verbal system in Rabbinic Hebrew. Based on a discussion of the difference between absolute and relative tense, it is argued that the verb forms in Rabbinic Hebrew cannot be described as absolute tenses. This is in contrast to the conventional view still espoused by many scholars whose area of expertise is Biblical Hebrew, according to which the Hebrew verbal system evolved from aspect prominence to a system of absolute tense. Several passages from the rabbinic literature serve to show that qatal, yiqtol, the participle, and even the construction [inline-graphic 01] plus infinitive occur in various time frames and must be seen as relative tenses. In line with recent studies on the rabbinic verbs, it is argued that aspect also plays a major role in the system. Indeed, in contrast to the standard view, it must be concluded that Rabbinic Hebrew is more aspect-prominent than earlier phases of the language. The final part of the article briefly discusses the widespread view that early grammarians invariably described Biblical Hebrew in terms of absolute tense and it is argued that the views of early scholars were in fact much more complex.

Abstract: This article draws attention to the phenomenon of translation-based interference in the analysis of Biblical Hebrew. It is argued that the so-called gnomic qatal only exists when we translate certain passages in a certain way. Based on Joüon's approach to the verbs in Prov 31.10-31, it is demonstrated that it is possible to interpret the woman in the poem as deceased. Consequently, the predominant verbal forms in the passage (qatal and wayyiqtol) are not gnomic, contrary to the almost universal rendering of the forms as present tense in modern translations. Rather, they have their usual anterior meaning. Other examples of translation-based interference in the analysis of Biblical Hebrew (including the question of the verbs in biblical poetry) are discussed, and a case is made for relative tense as the appropriate category for describing the semantic content of the basic opposition between the (non-volitive) finite verbal forms.

Abstract: 4QVisions of Amram has often been presented as a text that stands for human choice or some kind of “free choice” theology. The basis for this interpretation is an intriguing passage that most scholars—with a few notable exceptions—read as an invitation to Amram to choose his own position in relation to two beings who are described as the rulers of light and darkness, respectively. Taking its cue from Perrin’s call for a skeptical stance toward the dominant reading, the article reexamines the passage and its context and questions the standard interpretation from various angles. It discusses the surviving text of the passage, finds the usual reconstruction problematic, and proposes a number of other possible reconstructions. It argues that other parts of the composition are not concerned with the notion of human choice. Rather, deterministic thoughts seem to play a more prominent role, especially if 4Q542 (Testament of Qahat) is seen as part of the work, as has been recently proposed. In addition, the article gives a critical evaluation of the suggested resemblance between Visions of Amram and the Avestan Yasna 30. Various aspects of the relationship between human choice and divine determinism are discussed, leading to the conclusion that choice is often less “free” than it may seem to be.
