Abstract:
Presents a survey of ritual murder trials held in Poland between 1347-1816. Most cases ended in the execution of one or more of the accused. Reasons given for the spread of ritual murder accusations in the 16th-17th centuries are economic competition, Counter-Reformation influence (especially that of the Jesuits), and a desire to increase support for the local church. Gives a detailed account of the trials in Zacław (1747) [now Zaslaw, Belarus], Dunai-Miasto (1748), and Zytomierz (1753) [now Zhytomyr, Ukraine], based on archival material. The latter was instigated by Kaeton Soltyk, coadjutor of the Roman Catholic bishop of Kiev. Under subsequent Russian and French rule, no ritual murder cases were allowed.
