Abstract:
The first attacks on Russian Jews in the 19th century were instigated by the Greek population in Odessa, and the first attempt at self-defense was made by students there in 1871. In 1881, the police did not participate directly in the pogroms in southern Russia. Self-defense was forbidden and punishable by imprisonment. Sporadic attacks continued through the 1890s. The failure of the Jews of Kishinev to defend themselves in 1903 was widely condemned but, in fact, the Zionist self-defense groups had been arrested. In the wake of the pogroms, an effective self-defense organization was set up throughout the Pale. During the 1905 government-instigated pogroms, however, self-defense was forcibly prevented. Emphasizes popular support for these pogroms and the indifference of the intelligentsia.
