Abstract:
The corpus of Phoenician and Punic inscriptions encompasses approximately ten thousand texts distributed primarily throughout the Mediterranean during the period between the tenth century BCE and the first century CE. The vast majority are incised or inked on durable metal and stone supports. These inscriptions are generally either formulaic and have dedicatory or funerary content or they are very short—for example, a personal name sufficing to mark ownership of an object. A few inscriptions, however, stand out for their religious, economic, or even magical content. In this chapter, the author surveys the discovered examples, with special emphasis placed on such uniquely illuminating inscriptions, as well as on recent discoveries.
